Cluster Mapping Initiative is part of CLUSTER’s mandate for critical engagement in the city and public space through urban research, programs and design interventions. This initiative aims at the documentation and analysis of tangible and intangible urban elements, and establishing a reliable archive available to researchers, designers and policy makers, and accessible to engaged citizens. It includes a series of interactive maps and archives, urban tours and thematic itineraries, as well as pilot interventions in public space. Singing and Dancing for the Army: The relationship between celebrities and the military in Egypt

This presentation will examine the relationship between celebrities and the military in producing the boundaries of national belonging and exclusion in Egypt. Beginning in from 1952, it will explore representations of the military in various sites of popular culture and investigate how the army used celebrity culture to bolster its image. Ifdal completed her PhD in history and Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Sydney. Her research examined the role of the cinema in the making of colonial modernity.
