Singing and Dancing for the Army: The relationship between celebrities and the military in Egypt
Ifdal Elsaket

This presentation will examine the relationship between celebrities and the military in producing the boundaries of national belonging and exclusion in Egypt. Beginning in from 1952, it will explore representations of the military in various sites of popular culture and investigate how the army used celebrity culture to bolster its image. Ifdal completed her PhD in history and Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Sydney. Her research examined the role of the cinema in the making of colonial modernity.
