Overview of the Cairo Office
UNESCO Cairo Office, established in 1947, is the Regional Bureau for Sciences in the Arab States. It is also the Cluster Office for Egypt, Sudan and Libya.
The UNESCO Cairo Office is one of 52 field offices worldwide. It was originally established in 1947, and currently serves all Arab States in the area of Sciences. Its mission, like all other UNESCO field offices and units, is to contribute to peace and security in the world. This is done by promoting intellectual cooperation among nations through education, science, culture, social and human sciences and communication.
In view of its current mandate, the UNESCO Office in Cairo serves as a regional UNESCO office for Science & Technology in Arab states. Within this mandate, it receives decentralized regular programme funds to execute work plans in the specific areas of:
- Policy and Capacity Building (PCB)
- Ecological and Earth Sciences (EES)
- Water Sciences (HYD)
- Social and Human (SHS).
The main objective of UNESO Cairo Office (UCO), as a Regional Bureau for Science in Arab States, is to contribute to the scientific development of the Arab member states.
As a cluster office for Egypt, Sudan and Libya, (UCO) also undertakes national activities in those countries in all themes of UNESCO.
