Mission Statement

The Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design is an International Programme at Ain Shams University. IUSD was established in 2011 as a platform for interdisciplinary research and design on integrated sustainable approaches of landscapes, cities and buildings.

IUSD Research Platform consists of: IUSD – MSc Programme,  IUSD – PhD Programme and; IUSD – Professional Training. The interlinked programmes create the environment for IUSD – Lab Cairo.

IUSD MSc programme began as double-degree international Master’s programme organised by Ain Shams University and the University of Stuttgart. The master programme aims at preparing professionals in various disciplines related to urbanism adopting experiential learning approaches. It seeks to provide the students with support and guidance in expanding their individual expertise in the field of “Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design” while at the same time learning to work on complex, practice-based case-studies in interdisciplinary teams.

IUSD Lab – Cairo works with various European, Arab and African partners on research projects, with focus on integrated sustainable development. Our key research themes are: Integrated development approaches in metropolitan, remote and rural areas; ecological planning and design and; informal areas development.

IUSD – Lab Cairo together with IUSD – MSc Programme organises various activities such as

Student Workshops and Summer Schools; IUSD Salons and Lectures and; Strategic Workshops and Symposia.
