Cairo University - Sheikh Zayed Branch (Egypt Nanotechnology Center)

The EGNC building is located on the new campus of Cairo University in Sheikh Zayed City, a suburb of Cairo. This state of the art facility includes a 600 m2 (expandable to 2000 m2 ) micro/nanofabrication clean room. 28 specialized laboratories will be equipped with sophisticated nano-scale research tools and instruments for characterization, nanosynthesis, rapid prototyping, packaging, bio-macromolecular manipulation, etc. A supercomputing center (16,384 cores delivering 200 TFlops) will enable large scale atomistic simulations.

All facilities will be made accessible to academic and industrial research and development organizations, whether they are public, private, or multinational.

The Egypt Nanotechnology Center was funded by the STDF and the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA). The main objective of the center is to lead the nation in conducting globally recognized scientific research and producing practical innovations that have a significant impact on the national economy. A state of the art facility was planned to be built on the new Cairo University Campus and includes a comprehensive set of advanced tools. The initial research focus is on: Thin film Silicon photovoltics, Graphene transparent conducting electrodes for thin film photovoltics, Energy recovery from solar concentrators' photovoltics for water desalination, computational modeling and simulation and also bionanotechnology and biosensors.
