Mission Statement
The Center for Economic, Legal and Social Studies and Documentation (CEDEJ) was created by the Franco-Egyptian cooperation agreement of 1968. It is the heir of the French School of Law in Cairo (1890-1956) of which he kept part of the documentary fund. The CEDEJ is a multidisciplinary research center whose work focuses mainly on contemporary Egypt in all disciplines of the human and social sciences (political science, law, economics, geography, sociology, anthropology, contemporary history, etc.). The CEDEJ is part of the network of Mixed Units of French Research Institutes Abroad (UMIFRE), spread over the five continents, with a strong representation in the Mediterranean basin and in Western Asia (see the map of UMIFRE). The CEDEJ is placed under the dual supervision of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE) and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) of which, since 2006, it has been a Support and Research Unit, the 'UAR 3123. The CEDEJ has the status of Financially Autonomous Establishment (EAF) and is attached to the Cooperation and Cultural Action Service of the French Embassy in the Arab Republic of Egypt. CEDEJ has a branch in Khartoum, CEDEJ-K. The center favors empirical field research. Its scientific activities are divided into three thematic axes: Cities, mobility and the environment (responsible: Pascal Menoret); Governance and public policies (head: Mehdi Labzaé); Digital humanities (responsible: Hala Bayoumi). The CEDEJ aims to welcome researchers and students of various nationalities, to offer them access to its documentary resources, to offer research seminars and conferences, and to publish research work, particularly in the review Egypt Sudan Arab Worlds (ESMA), formerly Egypt Arab World, available online at cairn.info and openedition.org. The CEDEJ has published nearly 300 books since its creation. The center also has a large documentary fund: a library of more than 36,000 volumes with an online catalog; statistical data; a map library of Egypt; press kits from 1976 to the present day, etc.
