We hope you had a wonderful summer, and are ready for the Fall season!
Our team is excited to invite you to Cimatheque's Fall screening program, Beyond the Frame: Defining Alternative Cinema, which will begin Sunday, September 10th. The program will kick-off with a screening of Khairy Beshara's rarely seen, and deeply personal docu-fiction Moondog (2012), followed by other extremely highlighting alternative film language and aesthetics.
Beyond the Frame is a program we have been formulating for some time: it is a modest attempt to raise a few questions regarding the definition of alternative cinema by providing a kaleidoscopic view, moving from region to region, and decade to decade. The first two weeks will focus on Egyptian cinema of the last 20 years, featuring works from directors Atef Hetata, Oussama Fawzi, alongside a younger generation of filmmakers such as Nadine Khan, Nadine Salib and Karim Hanafy. These works present a challenge to the dominating film aesthetics of their time, and have each struggled to be produced and distributed in ways each filmmaker deems fit and necessary.
The second part of the program will focus on contemporary Arab cinema of the 2000s, tracing some of the remarkable propositions different filmmakers have made throughout the decade. Featuring important films by Nouri Bouzid, Tawfik Abu Wael, Abdellatif Kechiche, and Maher Abi Samra, amongst others, each work traces the tricky patchwork of malaises haunting the region: from the specter of colonialism, the difficulties of migration, terrorism, and the inherent injustices of neoliberal socio-economic policies. The issues are deconstructed through deeply personal storytelling that challenges the status quo of current modes of production.
Finally, Beyond the Frame will end this edition of programming by focusing on underground cinema, showcasing highly influential - and in many ways deeply controversial - films made entirely outside the mainstream. These movie force us to think, and boldly captures the lives of people living on the margins, possessing the power to haunt us long after we have left the theatre.
