Zawya is pleased to invite you to its event “Hybrid Reels: Revisiting the Documentary” which will be taking place between May 6- May 26th. As our first curatorial tribute to the genre of non fiction, Hybrid Reels will showcase more than 20 films made between 1922- 2015. 

The films are grouped into three sections, Narratives (6-12 May) Anthropology on the Screen/Beginnings (15-17 May) and finally, Highlights (20-26). Within these three sections and in addition to the screenings there will be a variety of talks, discussion and masterclasses. More details regarding the dates and times of the discussions will be announced soon.

Section 1: Narratives ( 6-12 May) 

May 6th - 7:30PM The Three Disappearances of Soad Hosny - Followed by a q&a with director Rania Stephan

 

May 7th - 7:30PM Close Up- Directed by Abbas Kairostami

 

May 8th - 7:30PM Here and Elsewhere- Directed by Jean Luc Godard

7:30PM Experiments with Video
This screening will feature two video art pieces by Lebanese artist Marwa Arsanios and Syrian artist Simone Fattal
Have You Ever Killed a Bear or Becoming Jamila- Directed by Marwa Arsanios

This section will feature a selection of short Egyptian documentaries:
Afaq-Directed by Shadi Abd El Salam
Cairo 1830- Directed by Samir Auf
Two Faces in Space-Directed by Samir Auf
**The screening will be followed by a talk given by renowned documentary filmmaker Samir Auf titled “ Undefinable Documentary.”
 

7:30PM Leviathan- Directed by Lucein Castaing- Taylor and Verena Paravel
**The screening will be followed by a talk titled “ The Right to Look” given by Professor Kiven Strohm, visual anthropologist at the American University in Cairo.

An animated conversation with Noam Chomsky.

**The film will be followed with an open discussion about surveillance. 
The screening is in partnership with Mada Masr and Motoon

7:30PM Gay el Zaman- Directed by Dina Hamza
**The film will be followed by a q&a with director Dina Hamza and producer Marianne Khouri +q&a

7:30 PM Concerning Violence - Directed by Goran Olsson
**The film will be followed by a Q&A with Hanan Sabea, Anthropology professor at the American University in Cairo
