To launch D-Caf - Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival 2014 with a splash, we invite you all to a screening of the much anticipated film, "Underground/On the Surface", winner of the Muhr Arab Award for Best Director in the documentary section at Dubai Film Festival.

Synopsis:
Following the underground shaabi music scene, known as ‘mahraganat’, the film focuses on the surge of popularity this genre recieved following the revolution; Oka, Ortega, and Wezza, three of the movement’s most prominent artists, are suddenly put under the spotlight, so the question is: will they be able to preserve their identity as independent artists?

Salma El Tarzi
Graduating from the High Cinema Institute in Cairo, Salma El Tarzi explored several aspects of filmmaking before settling on producing documentaries. In 2004 she won a prize at the Rotterdam Arabic Film Festival for ‘Do You Know Why?’ and in 2008 she made her first documentary for Al Jazeera Television. In 2013, Underground/On the Surface won theMuhr Arab Award for Best Director in the documentary section at Dubai Film Festival.
