The exhibition NEXT TO HERE presents 18 photographic works by young documentary photographers from North Africa and the Middle East. The works originated in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Sudan, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq and in the United Arab Emirates. The works were produced in the context of 10 photography workshops in MENA organized by the Goethe-Institut and its local partners in 2013 and 2014.

The Cairo workshop, led by Rana El Nemr and Jens Liebchen, was a cooperation between Goethe-Institut Kairo and Contemporary Images Collective and resulted in an exhibition earlier this year (LAYER OF GREEN).

NEXT TO HERE is a selection from a total of 74 photographic works. It offers visual narratives about the world right at the doorstep - “next to here” and in our time. These photographic works explore landscape, both urban and rural, and they portray people. All of them share a decided interest in the world surrounding us, and in the people who live in it.

In the months to come, the exhibition will be presented in Dubai, Khartum, Amman, Ramallah and other cities of the Arab world.
