"Live, Pray, and Die: Early Christians of the Western Desert" is the title of the lecture that will be given by Nicola Aravecchia, the Coptic chair at the Egyptology unit.

This lecture will illustrate the results of the archaeological work carried out at two sites in the Dakhla Oasis of Upper Egypt, i.e., the Greco-Roman city of Amheida/Trimithis and the rural settlement of Ain el-Gedida. Particular emphasis will be on the archaeological evidence for the existence of Christian places of cult (and therefore of active Christian communities) at both sites since the early fourth century CE. The lecture will consider the contribution that the evidence from Amheida and Ain el-Gedida offer on the development, within rural Egypt in Late Antiquity, of architectural forms pertaining to Christian worship.
