Ottoman-period occupation of Qasr Ibrim in Egypt
Pamela Rose and André J. Veldmeijer

The paper will present a brief overview of the Ottoman-period occupation of Qasr Ibrim in Egyptian Nubia. Initially established in the later sixteenth century as the southernmost Ottoman military garrison in Egypt, over time it became increasingly isolated from Cairo and the Porte and embedded in the local Nubian community. Excavations carried out by the Egypt Exploration Society allow a vivd insight into the daily life of the inhabitants of Qasr Ibrim during this time, from their military duties to their houses furnishings, clothing and diet.

Dr. Pamela Rose is the Deputy Director of the Austrian Archaeological Institute, Cairo branch. She was field director of the Egypt Exploration Society excavations at Qasr Ibrim from 1995-2007.

The second part of the lecture, shortly discuss the research of the Ottoman footwear, which was recently published. The symbolic first specimen of this volume will be presented today too. It is the first time that Ottoman footwear from Egypt (and outside of Egypt) has been analyzed in detail. The preliminary analysis focuses on footwear technology, within the framework of the Ancient Egyptian Footwear Project. A broader interpretation will be combined with the results of the analyses of the finds from the other epochs of Qasr Ibrim's history, such as the age of Christianity and the Meroitic Period.

Dr. André J. Veldmeijer is assistant-director for Egyptology of the NVIC and ancient Egyptian leather- and footwear specialist.

The evening will be closed with the famous Kushary party at the rooftop.
