Shadi Abdel Salam – Egypt – 1969
The Mummy – in English dubbed as ‘The Night of Counting the Years’ – was Abdel Salam’s first and only feature film. Set in 1881, it tells the story of a clan in Upper Egypt that makes money robbing pharaonic artefacts and selling them on the black antiquities market. After a conflict with the clan, one of its members goes to the police and helps the Antiquities Service to find back a stolen cache of mummies.
Often listed as ‘the most important Egyptian film ever made’, the Mummy is a must-see for everyone interested in Egyptian cinema.
