About the exhibition
Layer of Green exhibition is the outcome of a photography workshop organized by Goethe-Institut Kairo and CIC- PhotoSchool which took place in Cairo in November 2013. The workshop was devised and guided by Egyptian Artist Rana ElNemr and German Artist Jens Liebchen who are co-curating the exhibition together with CIC.

The workshop investigated contemporary photography and artistic strategies that explore and reveal surrounding realities. Special attention was given to what we referred to as the "Layer of Green“ - a highly adaptable layer that reflects a notion of green within contexts of social, political, economic and cultural realities and aspirations.

During the workshop, participants have shared their thoughts on that Layer of Green, and they started to visually explore the layer's presence in its various forms, intensities and scapes. Throughout the following three months, the photographers have developed their photographic series with minor mentorship from El Nemr & Liebchen.

In their works, the photographers are addressing various aspects of "green" within various levels of perception, from agriculture and greenhouses, to traffic; recreation; consumerism; still-life; life and death; as well as more subtle features and aspects of the Layer of Green.

About the organizers
The CIC-PhotoSchool aims to develop a broad and critically effective visual media landscape and documentary practice with local and regional capacity through offering strategized photography curricula with artistic, practical, theoretical and career-based options in context and response to the needs of the Egyptian society.

The workshop and the exhibition are part of a regional project of the Goethe-Institut with emerging photographers in North Africa and the Middle East. A number of workshops and exhibition in all of MENA, and also a regional exhibition to come up in autumn this year are addressing the issue of environmental change.
