The Internet has emerged from the academic research world to become an integral part of our lives. It has changed the way we communicate; the way we conduct business; it has impacted all aspects of culture, society and economy.

No single individual, group or country controls the Internet. It is a global distributed system of independent networks that operates without a central governing body.

The term “Internet Governance” emerged long time ago in the context of developing standards and managing the technical resources that make the Internet work. As the Internet continued to grow, its governance has evolved over time and become a subject of debate at national, regional and international levels.

What do we hope you take away from this workshop? That you will begin to understand what Internet governance is; who the main actors or stakeholders are; and why it is important to get involved.
