Fawzi Salah - Egypt - 2010

Shoushou and Mohammad are two children who live and work in Cairo’s tanneries. In ‘Living Skin’ we see them at work handling animal skins, treating them with dangerous chemicals and shipping them by horse and cart in their polluted neighbourhood. In an appealing voice-over the boys talk about the inhuman living conditions which the tanneries' inhabitants and workers are witnessing, but they also share their dreams about the girls they love.

To make this documentary, director Fawzi Saleh went to live in the tanneries for several years. As he gained the trust of the people in this closed community, he was able to get skin-close to capture the daily routines of the boys and show us their world. ‘Living Skin’ is an eye-opening documentary you will not soon forget. After the screening director Ahmed Fawzi will join us for an interesting artist talk where you can ask him all your questions.
